The Gear of Enigma (2015)

Description

-------
Not much is known about the circular carbon black mechanism, or the intricate and strange ring-like cerulean vessel it is nestled within. When our explorers first reported the unusual structure back to base, our evaluator engineers dubbed it "Enigma" almost instantly. The name stuck, and it was indeed appropriate... at least... for the time being.

From observation of imagery and footage captured of Enigma, our eval team has concluded that the band of flame-hued energy flowing through the blue vessel seems to be its' means of movement through the void, possibly like a railway or zipline. The energy band has been observed to span farther than our eyes can see, and possibly is a telltale sign as to where Enigma is headed, as well as the origin of its' journey.

We have reason to believe that the energy band is also utilized as a source of fuel for Enigma's apparent passenger, the gear. Our ray, electronic, protonic, cation, and anion sensors have detected that Enigma is concentrating a portion of the energy band, in a faint orange sphere encompassing the gear. The gear looks like it is circulating this sphere of energy at a steady rate, which would explain why our equipment shows a lot of movement from the electrons, protons, and ions surrounding the black mechanism.

Enigma's passenger is speculated to be a sentient being, or at at least something with some sort of intelligence. The two glowing, sky-blue dots on the gear's surface appear to be eyes used for sight, or perhaps for other forms of detection... but they are so expressionless and unmoving, that we really have no idea what they are for.

Judging by the white aura encircling the gear, we have proposed a few ideas, one being that this aura acts as a cryochamber to keep the gear in a state of dormancy for prolonged interstellar travel. Another of our theories, is that the aura is a type of energy based shield designed to protect the gear from the hazards of open space.

When our eval team utilized radar and radio sensors to pick up possible signals being emitted by Enigma, we thought it was sending out ones similar to our own technology. That was one we discovered something fascinating.

Taking a closer look at the sensor readings, we found out Enigma was not emitting any kinds of signals at all, but rather, reflecting the ones being sent from our equipment back at us, with a slight change in the wavelength and frequency.

After sending and receiving our reflected signals, we found there was a pattern in the signals changes, an indication that Enigma, or its' passenger were attempting to make contact with us. Once we crack Enigma's code, we will see if we can make deliberate communication with them.

So much is still uncertain about Enigma. Such as... what is its' purpose? How old is Enigma, and how long has it been traveling? Was Enigma built by the gear, or the other way around, or are they both the creation of a highly advanced civilization somewhere out in the void? Is there other vessels like Enigma, or is it a one of a kind?

Many questions like these invoke further study about Enigma. We have made futile attempts to get a close up observation of Enigma, but ever time we get to exactly 720 meters from it, it harmlessly reflects our ship back in the direction we had come from. We have also noticed that a few of the nearby asteroids "bounce" away from Enigma when they reached that same distance to it. We assume this is Enigma's defense feature designed to protect it from potential dangers as it travels along.

In the meantime, we are doing what we can to watch Enigma's behavior and characteristics from afar, and hope to discover as much as we can about it. As soon as our team finds out more, we will write to base, ASAP! This is AGERE Second Commander Kevlar Dean, over and out!

In this story, AGERE stands for Allied Gaian Exploration Research Enterprises.

Just decided to play around my new drawing tablet, a UGEE M1000L. This is my first tablet, and it is beginning to grow on me. I made this piece work with my tablet, using Sketchbook Pro 2015, to test out pressure sensitivity and line curve smoothness.

I ended up taking the art software's French curve tool, began tracing it, rotating it clockwise a little bit, and repeating the last two until I realized I had created a really cool looking, blue, netted loop thingy! :la:

At first I was going to call it the "Techno Bagel" but after trying out some other stuff, I decided to call it the "Eye of Chroma," because I had inserted a small circle, which contained a dot of each prismatic color, into the center of the loop thingy. After I eventually tossed that idea, I played around a little more, and the "Gear of Enigma" became the final result! :D

Enigma refers to the blue loop thingy. Which, in my story mentioned at the top of the description, is some sort of unusual space vessel of some sort. The Gear refers to the black mechanism located in the center of Enigma, and is the vessel's odd and mysterious passenger. :o

After finishing Enigma and the Gear, I saved it as a "transparent background" pic, and uploaded it onto my iPad III, where I added the starry background, orange energy band, icons, and text via ProCreate and TouchDraw.

(The starry background took me around three hours to do, because most of the stars were manually painted in one by one using an airbrush. Then I remembered I had designed a brush called the "StarMaker," which had been made for this very purpose, but which, frankly, I had forgotten about. ^^; After switching over to that brush, it must've helped me shave off at least a good two hours worth of work! Whew! :faint: )

I believe I spent at least a total of six hours or more on this piece (not bad for a rookie, eh? ;p ) I am overall quite happy with the outcome, and I hope you'll enjoy viewing it as much as I enjoyed drawing it! :D

Please do feel free to comment! I would very much like to hear your feedback and thoughts about this work! Also, don't be shy to add this to your favorites, if you like it! I would appreciate that quite much! :D

Space scenes are really tough to do well, but so much fun to make! I do think your starfield looks pretty good. Some areas on the left could do with more randomization, I think. I'm seeing some streaks that run diagonally left to right, which sort of makes the field look computer-generated.

I like the concept of the spiral space ship with its mysterious little passenger :) They look like stickers right now, though, and do not really blend with the environment. I think you could really improve this piece by making sure the colors affect each other. For instance, that orange band is bright and opaque enough to block out the starfield behind it, and yet it doesn't seem to be casting any light on your ship. Instead, your ship is lit flatly from the front. Is it floating in front of a star that is very close by? Or near another ship projecting light onto it?

This reminds me of both the Helix Nebula and the Hourglass Nebula. You might want to Google some images of these real space gas formations for some ideas on how to make your scene look more otherworldly. Please keep at it! :D
