Description

"O Phoenix, resplendent empress of the sky and dawn... I long for thine aureate effulgence to warm my lorn heart. Let thine melodious voice sooth my soul and guide my way amidst the darkness.

I earnestly beseech thee to share with me... thine story."   ~ The Vindicator, Prima Praetoria MXII

"Come close to me, my child...

...feel my tender warmth, and voice mild.

For eons, in here I slept...

...and countless times, bitterly wept.

For long before, I had been wild and free...

...my blazing wings, carrying me farther than the eye could see.

I had been, the crimson rose of Dawn...

...a princess and daughter, of the Sun.

My people adored and praised me, with fanfare...

...for I ruled over them, with tender loving care.

But, how would I have ever known...

...that a dark evil, lurked so close to home.

For I had confided, in that which you should't trust...

...a supposed friend, once deemed good and just.

My downfall, came from that which I upheld...

...and the very things I shunned, infiltrated to meld.

By the time I realized, it was too late...

...the enemy, had already breached through the Gate.

I fought, to defend the home I held dear...

...despite the thousands of marauders, drawing near.

Comrades stood by my side, valiantly till last breath...

...ones I'd failed to appreciate more, yet still loyal unto death.

We held the assault off, for as long as we could...

...but gradually we were cut down like, the woods.

The adversaries, they had me surrounded...

...my last line of defense, sufficiently confounded.

At last, I believed it was time to meet fate...

...when deliverance came, from the wing of my mate.

He sacrificed his life and power, to save me from the violence of hell...

...encapsulating and shielding me, in an adamant indigo shell.

Whispering, faintly and softly in my ear...

...he said, "My sweetheart... never fear.

For I will send you, to a world made safe...

...that you may flee, the enemy's wrath and strafe.

I, have done all in my love and might for you...

...that all your dreams and hopes, will one day come true.

But when you arrive, I cannot keep this shell from binding you...

...only a soul of Vindication, will be able to break through."

With a look of deep sadness, but also encouragement...

...my soulmate, launched the shell into the firmament.

As everything, vanished from view...

... I felt his last breath, slip away too.

My world, had been brutally torn apart...

...taking with it, those close to my heart.

The invaders, razed everything in sight...

...ensuring, to leave nothing untouched by their smite.

Evil, seemed to have triumphed that day...

...taunting and sneering, as my shell beamed away.

In the darkness and dead silence, of Deep Space...

...I couldn't even hear my mind speak, as it paced.

All light, appeared to have vanished from my soul...

...there was nothing left, but an infinite blackhole.

As my shell travelled on, I stayed awake for days...

...crying and grieving, bowed as one who prays.

Finally, when I could keep my eyes open no longer...

...I wearily drifted off, my heart full of sadness and somber.

How furiously I longed, to never ever wake up...

...that akin to my loved ones, I could drink from death's cup.

Sleep was kind to me, and partly granted my request...

...permitting me a deep slumber, to ride out the journey best.

Though my body slept, my soul was wide awake...

...meditating and contemplating, that was no mistake.

As centuries past by, my consciousness gradually slipped away...

...lulling me into a deep fantasy, as an ethereal dream may.

Yet, it was in this apparent state of oblivion...

...that purpose was rekindled in me, via a profound vision.

In it, I saw an awe inspiring bird of pure white fire...

...exultantly rising, above her humble nest of dusty ash and pyre.

It was then, that I realized there was still work for me...

... this dream, was meant to set me free.

With renewed vigor, and life...

...I felt my heart set ablaze, unburdened from all strife.

Then, a liberating presence came near...

...breaking me free of my shell, with strength shear.

...

...

...

Bursting through I see many hues...

...white, gold, black and blue.

A stranger of calm majesty...

...who has granted me fair amnesty.

How wonderful it is to feel the wind in my feathers...

...to be able to sway freely, and dance like the heathers.

Thank you, Soul of Vindication...

...with your aid we will bring liberation.

We will purify, a world that was taken with bloodlust...

...we will restore peace, bring back harmony, and avenge the just."

Poetry! Poetry! Poetry! I can't get enough of it! :la: YAAAAA! Lately I've been reading some poetry by Rabindrath Tagore as well as the tidbits that :iconcorrvo: writes in his art descriptions. Both have inspired me to take a try at it! :eager:

Well, here we are! Now about the art! In this work, I happily stumbled (accidentally) across the application of bolding and tapering while drawing the Vindicator's outline. I've found this gave a very dramatic effect to her, making her really "pop" out in the picture! :omfg: Well, sometimes you discover the most unique and creative things when an accident or "mishap" happens!

I also experimented with reflected light and the use of a brush to make flares of radiance coming up from behind the Vindicator! I think it looks quite nice! :boogie:

Enjoy, my friends! :D And feel absolutely free to comment so I can know what you think of this artwork and the poem/story! I'd love to hear what you have to say! :highfive:

Onward to great creativity and imagination! :w00t!: :boing: :boing: :boing:

When I first looked at this, before I read the artist’s comment or the poem, I thought it seemed like a futuristic robot companion of some sort. I got the sense that the character was either being repaired, or that the small worm it’s holding was being healed or something to that effect. It was interesting to read the poem afterwards and see how different my initial impressions were to the actual story behind this.

I like your use of thick, bold line work, it gives a nice sense of weight. I find that the small creature she’s holding seems a little disconnected from the rest of the picture because it doesn’t have any line work in it though, I think adding lines similar to the ones found in the spiral in the background would help make the image a bit more cohesive. In addition I think some of the spirals in the background could be made thinner (if they’re further away) and thicker (if they’re closer to the viewer) to give us a sense of depth.

The pink ‘spray’ outlines the character quite well and adds a friendly and calming tone to the overall mood of the picture I think. I like how you have the blue and pink lights playing off of each other. I think you did a good job with the blue light source throwing bounce lighting. For the pink I feel like it would throw a lot more colour around than what it is currently, and I don’t find that it looks like a light source. Try experimenting with making the inner parts of the pink lighter and brighter to give us a sense of light being given off.

I like the way that you’ve arranged the spirals in the background to lead our eye to the small creature that she’s holding, it helps keep us in the picture while we’re moving around. While I think that your composition works quite well, I think that if you had offset the character to the left or right a little more instead of having her be so close to the center it might have created more of an interesting composition.

Overall I think you’ve got an interesting character here captured in a rather intimate, inspiring moment. Keep up the good work!
